Question: I would like to breed my mare. This is the first time I've breed anything. I had her cultured/sesitivity done but could you tell me if AI is the better way to go? What are the facts about it or how can I find out about the facts and dangers?
Answer:
AI (artificial insemination) is a very popular and safe way to breed
a mare. With the availability of shipped cooled semen from many of the
popular stallions, a Mare owner can get her mare bred by AI and not even need to take her away from home.
You need to decide what stallion you would want
to breed her to, and talk to the stallion manager regarding their
particular program. The Veterinarian that cultured your mare, or another veterinarian of your choice, would have to be involved if you decide to used the shipped cooled semen process and AI, so you would also need to discuss it with him.
If you decide on a stallion in your vicinity, natural breeding is also an option and your success at getting her in foal may be a slight bit better.
Whatever you decide, you will need to work with the stallion manager or
owner to get most of your questions answered.
