USE THE HERD INSTINCT WHEN TRAINING

Be sure to use the horse's natural herd instinct when schooling youngsters.

Allow a young horse to be accompanied by an older trained horse when you first take him away from "home" (stall, pen or pasture) the first few times.

Let young horses watch an older horse perform maneuvers, such as walking through water, or crossing a trail course bridge.

Make your training area close enough to "home" so the young horse is comfortable, but far enough away so that "home" is too distracting during the schooling session.  And it's a good idea to teach a new maneuver when riding toward "home" rather than away.
