USE THE HALF-PASS TO SLOW YOUR HORSE

If you want to “slow” your horse at the walk, jog or lope, try this easy, effective exercise.

As you walk along, ask your horse to half-pass to the left each time the horse begins to pick up his pace.  You don’t have to go far, just a few steps to the side, then straight ahead again.

As soon as the horse begins to pick up his pace, half-pass again.   If you started half-passing to the left, continue to move in that direction.  Have a nice break in schooling before working the exercise and half-passing to the right.

Use the half-pass at all three gaits.

It won’t be long before your horse is slowing his pace the instant you begin to ask for the half-pass; soon you’ll just have to suggest the “drift to the left” and the pace will slow down.
